Stedelijk Museum JAN 2020

Stedelijk Museum is a modern art museum in Amsterdam, founded in 1874. The museum includes multiple floors full of influential artists from all around the world, including artists such as Barbra Kruger, Cindy Sherman and Carlos Amorales.

Some exhibition spaces/pieces that really captured my eye;

ESIRI ERHERIENE-ESSI : The inheritance

A series of paintings that connect us all, by placing ordinary moments in life and placing black people in the spotlight. helping to encourage the viewer to think about people as humans rather than a historical past, by trying to re-image a more humane and liberating narrative within her images and recreating a new history to open up peoples minds.

I fell in love with this art work firstly due to the beauty and colours involved, after then reading about her concept, i was extremely impressed as i felt her images really portrayed the message she was trying to send across to people and was a really moving exhibition. I love how she used history in a different way to others and instead of documenting the negative aspects as previously been done by many artists, she recreated a beautiful, positive new narrative of history to change the way we view the world.

Carlos Amorales: Black Cloud

An instillation piece of paper moths surrounding three rooms. Amorales based his installation piece off what was previously a dream about a room of moths which was so powerful he wanted to recreate it in art form. Although to me the piece was not as emotional connecting, i still found it to be interesting concept to recreate dreams and the size of the installation certainly captured my attention as it was so unusual.

When i left my country was on fire - unknown

This is actually not an exhibition piece from the museum but was actually a wall to draw/write where abouts in the world you had travelled from to visit the museum. As i was reading and viewing some of the places i noticed one drawing that really made me sad. ‘Unknown’ had wrote a quote saying;

‘when i left my country was on fire, tomorrow i fly home and she will still be burning, 15 Jan 2020’

I assume this was referring to the wild bushfires that spread rapidly across Australia during the beginning of 2020, killing hundreds of wildlife and although not part of the exhibition i thought unintentionally documented a time of history through artwork and really made be aware of how different things are all across the world at each time. So if whoever wrote this finds my blog, i hope your safe and that your country gets better!
