Huis Marseille Museum JAN 2020

Huis Marseille is Amsterdam first photography museum, with numerous floors and many different exhibition featured throughout the year.

The  main exhibition on show when i visited was: Outside Fashion – Fashion photography from the Studio to Exotic Lands (1900-1969)

Again i was extremely grateful to get to see this exhibition as it showcases fashion through out the years helping me to understand more about how fashion photography has evolved and moved with the generations.

This exhibition helped me hugely with my work,in regards to exploring different ways of styling and producing fashion photos.

Favourite exhibition pieces;

Henry Clark: Exoticism

This series of work features a huge square projection slide show, of fashion images captured worldwide. The series was produced on behalf of vogue in 1963-69, helping to explore culture, tourism and landscape photographs as well as maintaining bold fashion images that showcase the clothing well. Clark helps to engage his audience into the images, and does not only show clothing but through his choice of psychedelic colours and backgrounds creates a scene and energy with in his images. His work has heavily influenced the fashion photography we see so commonly today, and is a true icon for photographers all around the world.

Jean Moral: Ski-Outfit John Wanamaker, 1937

When looking around i came across this series of images consisting of women ski wear advertisements from 1937. I love these because they are some how quite comical. The images were actually shot inside of a studio and the backgrounds were placed behind them to set the scene. In one image a women is holding a cigarette down the middle of the slope which i found to be funny, as in reality I’m sure this would be very hard to do unless highly skilled, never mind the fact she also looks flawless. I love the concept of these highly staged images and think its so creative and would love to try micim this style with my own fashion work and maybe produce a more modern take on sports wear but take elements from this shoot such as a studio shoot with a location background, to combine both modern and vintage styles together. It also shows that for years people have been using manipulation in photography to create this idea of a perfect scenario in which just isn’t real at all.
