Jack Latham - Parliament of Owls

Guest Lecture @ University of Huddersfield

Jack Latham’s project ‘parliament of owls’ explores Bohemian grove, a private Gentlemen’s club based in Northern California. Latham’s Project initially started by exploring his curiosity of this group of all white male elites, that would congregate together in secrecy. However by exploring the outside communities surrounding Bohemian Grove, it made the project more alluring and engaging into the mysterys of the club based on public opinions.

Latham discovered many conspiracy theories of Bohemian Grove by talking to those outside of the camp, many who were against the it. He spoke with protesters such as Mary Moore and spoke with ex members such as Peter Phillips. His research took hours upon hours of searching through archives and interviews.

His project so far consists of landscape/portrait imagery and video footage as well as archives to help explore the story of Bohemian Grove.

Latham biggest advice to successful research was to always narrow your research down to one word; (his being ‘owls’ within his practice) to help keep your research on the right path and not go off in to many directions. I will definitely be using this method in my work as it can help me to narrow down my creative ideas.
