FOAM Museum JAN 2020

Whilst in Amsterdam i was fortunate enough to be able to go to FOAM museum otherwise known as fotografie Museum Amsterdam, where they were showcasing exhibition ADORNED- The Fashionable Show.

‘The exhibition Adorned – The Fashionable Show presents intriguing and challenging fashion related photography projects created by a new generation of visual artists. They all work with fashion, but most of them are not straightforward fashion photographers. For them, fashion and style are primarily tools to construct or question identities, to empower people and to play with cultures, gender, race and ages.’

I was extremely excited about seeing the different forms of work involved as it relates hugely with my project, as i also like to explore different culture, gender identity and alternative vs main stream styles within my fashion work.

Artists i found inspired me most;

Julia Falkner and Lorena Hydeman: Blah Blah Genitals

This series stood out to me as it shows the progression of our society so far. similarly to my previous shoot with Domi’s (boys cry blog), the series challenges stereotypical gender identities. The series show cases boys aged 6 to 16 years old from the UK, Spain and Austria, expressing their true selves through fashion by wearing what they want and challenging social norms usually put on children from a very young age. The boys are seen adopting ‘Feminine’ qualities, in the urge to show others growing up today that they are relatable and freedom of expression is fine.

MATEUS PORTO: OROGRAPH

Series OROGRAPHY helps showcase the ‘fantasies, freaks and queers’ of society. He started by taking reference from underground nightlife and aspires to showcase those who are normally over looked or classed as freaks. I love this concept, as again, i think its so important to be accepting of everyone and express your art form however you want especially through fashion / makeup. Mateus lets his models feel free to express themselves and create their true selves. His work is both gothic but bright and creates a fantasy world that I’m instantly drawn to.

I will definitely be adopting some of these qualities within my own work by aspiring to create out of the box, creative fashion pieces showcasing peoples personalities.

 Some of his collection can also be viewed on Instagram @orograph.

Justin Dingwell: Fine Art photography- A seat at the table/ Albus.

I was instantly drawn to Justins work due to his use of light. After seeing Justins work in FOAM he has now become one of my favourite photographers. His use of light in his images is impeccable. He makes his models appear angelic, aswell as still managing to capture their personality. His use of props within his work are also unique. Im unsure as to what retouch process he uses but i will certainly be looking into the process because i would love for my images to reach a level of Justins.
